The official counter is on nanowrimo.org. You do create an item here, either a static item or a book, if you have a high enough membership. When your ready to update your word count here on WDC just click the number on your counter type in the number and hit update. This is my first year doing nano with WDC so I don't know if adding your item will update the word count automatically or not.
