Perhaps I forgot to explain what I meant by "there should be a baseline". Surely no 6-7yr old is mature enough to read about murder or suicide. That is why parents, who have power of selection of reading material at that time, select writers like Enid Blyton. Thus, parents control most of the books you come across. Baseline.

As a child nears teenage, he becomes independent in selection of literature and that's when he needs to have an open relationship with his parents if something he reads bothers him or is new to him.
