Hello and Happy Saturday to everyone! I joined the site about a week ago. I've been poking around here and there trying to familiarize myself with everything. So far I have not posted any of my writing in my portfolio. Perhaps some of you can...throw some guidance in my direction. You see, my problem (what I see as a problem) is that my writing is all over the place. I have notebooks of poetry, I have an idea for a screenplay - that I decided yesterday I should start to put on paper rather that keep it rattling around in my head where it has been for years. I have written non-fiction historical pieces -- mostly about my ancestors. I am an avid genealogist and have a website dedicate to my family research. There is one ancestor who was fairly prominent which I wrote a short essay about; many, many people have contacted me (including a professor from Princeton) asking permission to use that essay for their own research or as a teaching tool. I have notebooks filled with research about comparative religion and spirituality. Pages of random thoughts and rants on topics from politics and health care to today's education system and why so many people today do not know how to properly use the word "seen"! You can see my dilemma. I have books about writing, I have read advice on websites about writing, they all say to write about what you love and what you are passionate about. Welllll...I am passionate about all of the things I mentioned about. Probably the one I am least passionate about would be poetry (writing it, that is -- I love reading it) but every once in a while something pops in my head and I start writing and before I know it I have a poem. HELP! How can I narrow my focus? No, I do not have ADHD. I'm not a person who is hyper and all over the place generally. I can almost be described as a sloth. :) Procrastinator fits as well. When it comes to narrowing down my writing, though, or my ideas for things I want to write, I don't know how to do it. Thanks for reading. I apologize for my first post being so long. |
