I usually respond to my reviews with at least a thanks to the reviewer, and sometimes an explanation for something in the story, but generally don't expect another response unless I specifically ask them for clarification on something (if they were a little too vague).
On the other hand, when they respond to my reviews, I often (not always) find reason to say something back. Since I get to most of the stories through the "Read a Newbie" section, it's usually just some words of encouragement if they sound like they are going to have do some editing / proofreading.
I don't know how typical that is, and it's not something I myself expect. :P
