More often than not I just set that project aside, and either work on something else or go do something completely different. Sometimes I can come back to it later that day...sometimes a week later.
Sometimes it sits as an unfinished story forever. That doesn't mean the original idea never gets used, but if your brain is simply telling you "no", then maybe it's because it realizes something isn't working quite right.
I have found that sleeping on it helps, if it's a long story and you're struggling to come up with a continuation of the plot. Often I'll lay in bed for awhile, pick up the story in my mind where I left off, and just...imagine it. The next day, I can write down the story as I saw it happening. :/
Does that make me weird? lmao
