For me, it indicates that I've reached a cusp in the story and writing it will totally change the direction and flow of the story. In my novel, this happened about 5 years ago, and resulted in me setting the story aside for awhile. I'm in one right now, but I've switched to writing short stories that are nearly the exact opposite of my longer work.
A friend of mine who is also a writer suggested that regardless of where your head is at, sit down and write *something*.
Another thing that works for me is to take a book by my favorite author and sit down and re-read it. Bury yourself in the story.
