Amazon and Kindle started their own publishing company called Create Space. I feel this is the best place for a new writer to start as they offer their service for free and once published your book is available worldwide through both amazon and kindle. They do offer paid services but these are not required, they even off free cover art which so many sites will charge for.
You also set up an author page where people can find other books you have published.
