Don't get me wrong, Jules Verne is exciting, I love Star Trek, I'm enjoying the hell out of UFO (Have you seen it?) but I think it was genius for Star Wars to be set "Long ago in a galaxy far far away." The problem remains, it is difficult to avoid being dated if your topic is cutting edge, hard science. It seems the harder you try, the more foolish you can look. At least that's what it looks like to me.
... so much I'd like to say at this point as this touches on a lot. Suffice to say it is a tension that makes me lean toward fantasy certainly as a writer, but also as a reader since the focus of those works is not the technology, usually, so I don't feel like I'm reading old news.
Still, though he got the timeline wrong, as far as I know, you have to hand it to Arthur C. Clarke.
