I get that just writing would help a lot (believe me, I need to just write as I have properly written in far too long!), but what about extra sideplots.

For a short story they could be removed for streamlining purposes, but in a novel they add depth to the story and world.

Do you ever come up with a story and know instinctively roughly how long it will be?
