It depends on whether the reason you are writing is to have lots of people read what you write or whether the reason you are writing is that it gives you satisfaction to construct things with words regardless of how many read it, get it, or enjoy it. In other words, are YOU the primary audience, or is it THE OTHER who is the primary audience?
Once that determination is made, the length question is easily answered. If you are writing for others then you give them what they want. If they want short then give them short. However, since giant epic novels are also successful, I don't think you can absolutely say EVERYONE wants it short.
