Someone's work is to be enjoyed (or appreciated or respected) completely independent of the person, I think.

Often we know little about the people who create things anyway. Perhaps Mozart murdered someone and got away with it. Who knows? It doesn't matter. When I like Mozart's music, it isn't Mozart I am liking, it is the music.
