The official definition of literature is a work that an English teacher would assign his class to read.

Notice that neatly eliminates most pornography from the definition. And which pornography is still allowed? Only that pornography which has the redeeming quality of having a "high literary value".

Generally speaking, "literature" has to have good grammar and spelling and not be trivial.
