Regarding "a personal connection"... Well, sure, if the writer of my favorite novel murders my aunt, then it probably will stop being my favorite novel.
Otherwise, reading your comment carefully, I put you as mostly a "work" personality. I doubt if anyone is all one or the other. I'm a fan of Jack Vance and have read everything he wrote, but for most sci-fi writers I usually tire of them after one or two examples of their work and as for their lives, I just assume it was some tedious long trek through the muck struggling to make a buck.
