Speaking of trilogies in general, not just for kids, as a reader I prefer that each book have a resolution of some kind, but no problem with also having a cliffhanger that leads to next book.
A simple example of a way to do it: Two brothers are captured by bad guys and a third brother struggles to rescue them. This is the first book. He does rescue one of them (resolution) but the other is still held prisoner (cliffhanger).
Another simple example: Man meets woman, love blossoms, but then the complications, but finally the ending - marriage! (resolution) Then last scene in book: A letter arrives the day after they get back from honeymoon. Man reads it, looks up with stricken face, and mutters "This changes everything..." (cliffhanger)
