It sounds like you naturally write things that some identify as horror. Even if the central question in the second book is, "Will their relationship survive?" I imagine that horrific endings might lurk around every corner. I like the happy ending too, but it doesn't hurt your story to have that happiness threatened at every turn by horror or minor characters suffer horrible fates to build the credibility of the threat to your MCs
