Maybe that IS his personality type... doesn't tell strangers his story, doesn't really have a story, or doesn't talk about his story at all because he's trying to forget it. Those ideas can open up some personality and character traits. Such as "speaks low, hushed tones". Maybe figure out what's hiding in his background!
