I'm a Snowflake Method person, so as I've started doing a one-paragraph summary of each key character's personal storyline....It suddenly dawns on me the motivation of why one of my characters is hanging out with my major character. Man, I knew motivation was the key to everything but REALLY KNOWING IT!!  I can now work it into my story. I never thought of it before.
