Writing Hurts: Review Forum

I need real advice on this one. DO I need to adjust the opening on the book (aka, is it too abrupt), or does it just need the right agent?

I haven't gotten any hits from agents on it yet, with 4 rejections and 4 still out deciding. The demand for this story is there, I've got a stack of poorly written children's books BOUGHT by the military FOR military families (handed out like candy), all of them failed to leave a lasting impression about life without a parent.

My problem is, I don't know if my book is to blame for no agent interest, or if it's their view of the market. I do have letters of recommendation from various military groups included in my query. Not sure what else to do, please help!
