Winging it is perfectly fine around here, and you might find something to inspire you at "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com" Open in new Window. - this list changes all the time but you can pretty much find a contest for all sorts of genres and writing types here.

"Writing.Com 101" Open in new Window. will give you some ideas on how to get about on the site and how to make your portfolio all awesome.

And always feel free to ask anyone here for help or advice. There's a huge wealth of knowledge in every corner, and we all love to chat writing (and reviewing)!
