I look at it this way. The reader may know what is "supposed' to happen, but he doesn't know if it will actually happen.
So even though I know the MC is the chosen one, I don't know if he will get the chance to be the chosen one. What if he is killed?
It's no different from a Treasure Island story where we have a map to the treasure, but we don't know if they will actually get to the treasure or what will happen if they do.
In the movie "Treasure of the Sierra Madre", we know from the beginning that they are going to find gold. Nevertheless, the unfolding of the plot surprises us.
Knowing one aspect of the plot does not mean I know everything about the plot.
