Welcome Mary/Sharon,

I hope you'll enjoy the FSFS group and WdC (writing.com) in general.

As far as I know, McCaffrey herself considers Pern to be science fiction, but mostly it's categorized as fantasy. But the border between the two isn't rigid, if you ask me.

I never read the books myself. I made the mistake of reading a short story set in the Pern universe in the Legends anthology, and, well, I don't think it would've been published if McCaffrey wasn't already an A-list writer. That really put me off her stories, but I probably should give some of her popular books a try.
