Likable people are great when they're friends, neighbors, lovers and spouses. Life is grand when you're surrounded by such people. Gather them to your bosom and nurture them, for they are precious.
But in fiction, such characters tend to be far too content with each other. If you want to stir up a plot, nothing does the trick like a bit of greed, avarice, jealousy, or just plain old nastiness. Flaws and warts make characters interesting. Bad choices and unintended consequences are what make a plot spin.
