I think likeable might not be the right word. Kind of like "realistic" isn't the correct word to use in a fantasy novel, but "verisimilitude" is.

Often we hear the phrase about a well written villain being "that character we love to hate"

Maybe run the story past another person, without telling them of your concern. Then ask what they though of each character.
