People have different goals, but the value of improving your craft is most obvious for those pursuing getting past a gatekeeper and published.

Something I learned this weekend is that a majority of readers don't finish what they pick up. So if it's not to their liking, they stop reading it and go read something else. Yeah, I don't do that, hence making it an alien thought. I read the entire anthology.

The point of improving your craft is that if you write vampire romances and a vampire romance reader starts your start, it has to be good enough under modern tastes to keep them reading to the end. So they don't stop.

If you don't hone your craft, they don't get past page 2.
