I see situations, paths society is on. I hear a challenge. Boom. Idea.

For example, I was on a steampunk forum, and somebody was bemoaning how all SP stories are about a tinkerer, or british spy. Challenge Accepted.

I've been pondering how automated vehicles was going to supplant jobs for a lot of people, and that was going to strain society as there are skilled workers, and absolutely no job for them due to technological advancement, and how we as society negatively judge the unemployed, as if that was solely their fault.

Ding!

This was originally a sci-fi parable, but when mated to the challenge, I came up with a steampunk story of a jitney driver, facing imminent unemployment due to a trolley car system about to be put in place.

This story is in my Profile, called Wheels of Progress. It earned me my first Rejection letter, a custom one from Beneath Ceaseless Skies, which meant it did not totally suck.

So basically, I think about things going on in the world, and see how I can reskin it and turn it into a story.
