I find it interesting that you say you don't give 1 or 2 star reviews. That seems like a rather weird bubble to put yourself in. I actually gave a 2.5 star review and devoted several paragraphs detailing overarching issues with the piece. The author thanked me for providing detailed feedback and outright said he wished previous reviewers had done that. Sometimes a detailed opinion in a review can be a boon to an author, as it shows not only ways to improve but a sign that the reader actually cares enough about the story to want to give it extra oomph.
