Agreed! I pantsed Book 1 for Camp NaNo, and my bad guy was the person who literally torments my protagonist, seemingly for the fun of it. Now that I'm working on Book 2, and actually Prepping it this time, I'm surprised by her back story.

And Book 1 may need some editing, lol.
