October Novel Prep Challenge

(Incidentally, I'm sure they didn't know about phasers in the late 1800's, but, hey, there's no rule that says you can't invent your own literary devices. Call it Waltz's Phaser if you like.)

(I hate it when names end in "s" or "z" or whatever and I have to actually know the rules.)
