Look also at "epistolary" works, fiction and non-fiction. These are stories told as a series or an exchange of letters.

People don't speak of the things they take for granted. Journal and epistolary novels live on sub-text. and a thick broad layer of it. Basing your piece on a documented era, for instance, means that you can establish sub-text just by citing a date.

Like July 4, 1944. It was a war-weary Independence Day. But it was a great week that followed.
