I agree that it may look messy, but I know that forum posts have a little note in the top right corner when they are edited. Perhaps this is a solution to the messiness? Using this system, the entries could be listed as "added" on a certain date, and that date would stay constant, but within each individual entry, if it had been edited, the little edited note could be added.

Really, it's not a big deal, but I found it strange that book entries were being listed as "added" on a date when they weren't added, merely edited.
