That is really interesting Jody - the reason I thought of the prompt is that last year my Mum's best friend had a bout of this "phantosmia" as we learned it was called. The smells he could smell were smoke, and petrol - mainly smoke (like cigarette smoke) in his flat, even though he lives alone and nobody in the flats adjoining his were even smoking. I have never heard of this before or come across someone who has suffered from it, but it can be triggered by a stressful situation, so that may explain it in your case. Do you still get affected by it?
