Gift Points (GPs) are just the site's virtual currency. You don't need GPs to participate in the fundamental aspects of the site like posting your work, reviewing others, or posting in forums. GPs can be awarded from one member to another as a reward, or for winning a contest. With GPs, members can purchase awards or badges for other members, or even purchase their own membership if they earn that many.
