As Emily and Angus mentioned, the site can be a bit daunting at first, but there's also a lot of great ressources if you know where to look, and a lot of nice, helpful people.
Most of the activity is in the individual groups, which are also good places for finding like-minded writers. Personally, I'd suggest the Fantasy and Science Fiction Society for discussing speculative fiction in general, and if you're serious about getting and giving quality feedback, WYRM is the group for speculative writers (there are requirements for applicants, though). Those have been the two groups most helpful in my journey to become a better writer.
