I just joined and I'm a bit overwhelmed by this place. A good friend suggested I join after reading some of what I'd written so I thought, why not? Who am I? My name is Michelle, but I prefer JoJo (JoAnna is my middle name, I've always been a rebel lol). I'm 64 and I've been writing for personal pleasure for the last 10 years. Most of what I've written is fantasy, all based in a world I created, one which, I'm afraid, is becoming more and more possible every day, but I don't want to get into politics... What do I write? My created world is post-war/famine/you-name-it (referred to as The Fall). Sort of the usual post-apocalyptic nightmare, but with a twist (of course). In my world, the Old Gods have returned and with them all sorts of creatures from mythology. The Power that was released began to manifest itself in some of Humanity, and to prevent another Fall, the Old Gods placed the world under The Covenant, a set of laws that manifested Humanity from preying on mundane Humanity. There are 12 Paladins that rule over the lands, enforcing The Covenant. How do I write? I haven't talked with many other writers, so I've got no idea how everyone else does it. I write sort of at the moment. I'll think of a scene or a series of scenes, maybe jot a couple of notes, then when keyboard time comes around, I sit down and just start writing. I'll admit that many times my brain moves in directions I did not see coming, which can set up some interesting messes that I then have to write my way out of. I ended being blocked for about six months because of a corner I had written a character into and couldn't figure a way out of, I ended up finally trashing it and writing something else, but that fragment is still on my hard disk waiting to be used at some point in the future. What about the naughty bits? I don't/won't/not interested in writing explicit sex. There's sex of course, but it's more implied than graphic. It's not my schtick. That's not to say my writing is plain vanilla, it's not. I am just not going to describe every permutation of sex between partners. That's not world building or story telling in my mind. I'll leave that sort of thing to writers like Laurell K. Hamilton and her ilk. What else do you do? Being retired certainly has its benefits! I write about 3-4 hours per day, and when I'm not writing, I'm playing with my 5 cats (I'm the crazy cat lady in the neighborhood), watching TV, or reading. I'm a recreational shooter, both pistol and rifle, and I hunt and fish. I can't think of anything else at the moment, this is probably the most non-fiction writing I've done in months!! Thank you all for such a wonderful and slightly intimidating place! JoJo |
