There are so many options here I understand the overwhelmed sense of things.

First suggestion is stay on this page and follow much of what 'The Story Mistress' has linked for you. It is a great intro to settle you down and get you grounded with the basics.

Second, if you want to test your chops, hop on to the reviewing page (top left, drop down menu, click 'Read and Review' or 'Please Review'). The second gives you the option to choose length and genre, the first is at random.
