She pulled the edge of the heavy drape carefully from its edge just enough to peer into the yard. Leaves rustled as a squirrel scampered choppily across the branch of a red oak near the deck. She held one eye shut and used the other, moving her head left to right to scan the backyard. No sign of him.. Then she turned and quietly but hastily ran toward the front door hoping to catch a trace of a patrol car on the horizon. As she turned to head into the front room he stood waiting. “Ha what are you doing here?” she cried in fear, “ Why? You're not happy to see me?” William Parker was violating a restraining order by entering the apartment of his ex wife. He put his arm around her neck and clenched his teeth. She knew this face. He was getting enraged and was about to hurt her. “ Why aren't you happy to see me?” Grace had been battered for years by William and stood again in fear that he was about to beat her again. But this time she decided she was going to fight back. With all her strength and energy she lurched her knee upward straight into his groin it caused him to double over in pain. Seeing his head bowed low she again came up with her leg but this time caught him right on the jaw with her heel sending his head sideways. In a furious rage, he prepared to strike. As he started to swing forward his fist was stopped abruptly by a policeman as he entered the room. In one final confrontation, Grace Parker finally stood up for herself and after letting go of all her pent up rage, put fear away and set herself free. |
