I work on one long work (novel/novella/book). However, whenever an idea for a short story/poem/essay/drabble/whatever comes, I write that. Normally a long work will take me, at the most, 2 months for a first draft (even with the extra writings thrown in). During that time, at least another ten shorts will make themselves known and be completed. Once it's done, I work exclusively on a bunch of short things until the next long idea comes along, unless an idea has already hit me. I also have one long story I've been working on for three years that I'll go back to when I feel inspired. Plus I have university stuff to write, my regular columns and editing I do.
As for regular characters - my fantasy stories (pulp fiction sword and sorcery tales) involve a large cast of characters who appear in many stories, all set in exactly the same world with the same myths, lore, etc. Apart from that - no. All my stories are standalones.
