I believe standing is a nice way to show respect for the reading of God's word. However, I don't think it is a deal-breaker with God if one does not stand. In most of the churches I've attended, we were normally asked to stand for the reading of the Word. But, there are those who were unable to stand. I don't think they had less respect than those who stood. I think God knows the difference and he knows each individual's heart. So, I think this can also become a stumbling block if it is taken to the extreme as something things are prone to be. We should be very careful when we try to impose doctrine and religion in building a relationship with God. Jesus made it very clear they are not one and the same. What one feels shows respect, might not be so with another...and we must be careful lest it causes us to stumble into judgment of others.
I went into more detail here: "Invalid Item" I cited a few Bible verses to back up what I've said and my reasoning for why I think this way. :)
