I think I read JM much the way Masktrix does. She is extremely sensitive to hierarchies and to her own and other people's places in them. She yearns for a better position for herself, and is terrified of falling. I suspect much of her behavior stems from an unconscious awareness of how privileged she is, so that she knows she was born high and has a lot to lose, and that's one thing that makes her obsessed with hierarchy and reputation. And she is careless about what she'll do and who she'll hurt, not because she lacks empathy but because she is so self-absorbed that she doesn't stop to think about other people. [At least when masks are in play, and probably when any other important status game crops up. Outside of status games, I've little doubt she can be quite empathetic.]
