When looking for guidance, it's best to go to the experts.

The two best how-to books I've read on writing memoir are these:

Writing a Life: Teaching Memoir to Sharpen Insight, Shape Meaning--and Triumph Over Tests by Katherine Bomer

Writing Personal Essays by Sheila Bender, or the second edition, Writing and Publishing Personal Essays

You may be able to find a copy at your local library in the 808 section.
