Sure, I guess. But one of the things I really liked about this 15-chapter arc was that it never felt predictable. There is no reason that any of the other choices have to circle back to Will (though some might circle back to him earlier than this one did), so Will's appearance didn't feel inevitable—
Until he did show up, and then JM's aside about him "owing" her felt like a Chekov gun that had just, inevitably, fired.
BTW, I think that's an important point to make about that overused trope. Chekov guns must be fired; but something isn't a Chekov gun until it fires. Until that point, it might must be part of the scenery. A lot of genre fiction would be more satisfying if writers didn't put their Chekov guns in a display case with the label CHEKOV GUN underneath it. This arc handled it just right.
