Like I say, the decision only emerged halfway through writing the arc. It could have been very very different - and even JM’s choices for the last few chapters don’t have to go that route. It was just a satisfying arc for me to write. There was actually a chapter I wrote for a branch I chose in the end not to take, where JM has a date with Mark as ‘Stephanie’.

But in the end it felt too convoluted at that point in the story with the identity gymnastics.
