Because fact is often stranger than fiction, you just cannot make up scenarios that are happening in the real world now. Mine the news for scenarios and characters. Life is giving us writers a treasure chest full of ideas. Now it is up to us to stitch all them together in a quilt that is either crazy or beautifully precise. The choice is ours.
