One possible solution that I’ve cooked up for the two different methods of performing the spell without major alterations is that maybe instead of specifying putting the mixture onto the mask or a bowl, you can mention combining ingredients and firing them in a “container” over the sigil and applying it to the interior of the mask in one breath. Key is not to make the order of preparation and application definitive.
Depending on the book’s reader’s interpretation, they could view a mask as a container in itself. And the reason it doesn’t leave a paste residue when added to the mask directly is because it already completes the spell. And when the spell is done in a bowl, since it’s yet to be added to a mask, it leaves a product that permits for the completion of the spell.
