The nitty-gritty details of addition aren't necessary so long as you understand that the addiction becomes progressively more important to the user. More important than work, social engagements, relationships, self-care, even survival in many cases. So, yeah the user has a problem, but it doesn't have to manifest as a five day meth bender where the dude is running laps in 25 degree weather all night long carrying a boombox waiting for someone like Vagus to wander out of his house and go for a morning jog. Fast zombies are real. They're real!
I uhh, anyway, it can manifest as distance from the main character. That can evolve into lies, theft, sickness. You don't need a single needle jab or spree of erratic behavior (although it would add some flavor) to showcase the devastating social impact of addiction.
