Usernames on Writing.Com also provide @writing.com email addresses, once an account is closed - either intentionally by the user or by the site for inactivity or policy violations - the username can not be re-used.

Allowing the re-use of a deleted account username would be a massive privacy and security hole. Anyone could re-register an old email account and gain access to new email to that old address. This is particularly bad if it's found the email was used for access to other sites; one could then take over other accounts that didn't belong to them.


The personal information associated to deleted accounts is NOT STORED in our system after an account is deleted. Thus we CAN NOT re-verify the original account holder. Based on that, once an account is deleted, all that remains is the reserved, unusable username.
