gapminder
          you probably already know about this but if you don't, there is a web page called Gapminder
          it presents global demographic information, in a visual format.
Life expectancy
causes of death
number of children per woman
literacy levels
economics
etc
and it shows this information over the past couple of hundred years, where the data exists.
