You can challenge copied items when you find them. It is difficult to prove you were the original author, especially for short work. A novel is easier to prove, but still difficult, and in any case will always cost you time, effort and money.

As to how to stop the item being copied in the first place, you can't, except to not publish it at all. Or be a very bad poet.
