I think that statement is fine so long as it is something her own parents said to her when she was disapliined.

I often hear myself say "and I don't mean maybe." That was my mother's saying and now that I am older and understnad why she said it that wy it makes me whoot with laughter.... my grandfahter always used to say maybe when asked a yes or no question. It drove her nuts.

Also I would say it would be good conflict, not flashback. We are not taken to a scene in the past, just the thoughts and remembrances.
