Want to INTRIGUE newbies somehow??

It's simple: Switch the Newsfeed default from the Private one to the Public one....let them see FIRST how active the community is. Let them read and get excited. Teach them later how it's done. Just get them intrigued. Switch the default to the Public Newsfeed.

Whenever they login they see something happening!, not their dead personal newsfeed.
